Grocery Shopping - Make the Best of It PDF Print E-mail
My friend Janna despises going to the grocery store.  It's the last place she wants to be after a 10 hour day at work.

I sympathize.  If I'm not in the right frame of mind, or the right clothes, stopping by the grocery store is torturous!  But, if I am in the mood, I really enjoy it.

At one point or another we all have to go, so why not make it as pleasant as possible?

I know this is going to sound silly, but if you're going to go to the store on the way home from work - change your clothes first.  As far as I'm concerned, teetering down the aisles in a pair of high heels is torture.  Take a set of casual clothes to work, including a comfortable pair of shoes, and change before you head to the store.

That simple act will make all the difference in the world.  It will give you more time to compare prices and ensure you don't forget anything because you won't be in such a hurry to get home and change.

If you go to the store first thing in the morning, bring a cup of coffee or tea with you.  I was so excited when my Safeway put cup holders in their shopping carts!  If I go to the store on a weekend morning, I bring my coffee with me from home and take my time cruising around.

As I said, you're going to have to go to the store at one time or another.  Make the experience as pleasurable as possible.
  • If you start enjoying the process, you'll go more consistently.
  • If you go more consistently, your kitchen will always be well stocked.
  • If your kitchen is always well stocked, you'll likely cook more often at home.
  • If you cook more often at home... you'll save money.

Deciding why you don't enjoy going to the store and coming up with a solution can result in saving enough money for that summer vacation, down payment on a car or any other goal that is important to you.

As for my friend Janna, she was lucky enough to marry a guy who loves grocery shopping!
