Although the sprinklers and lawn were finished, there were still trees and plants to be put into the ground. But first, we needed to go shopping. This time, we opted to go to a different nursery. I took Mom and Gary to Roger Reynolds Nursery (http://www.rogerreynoldsnursery.com/) in Menlo Park. They have a vast selection of plants. What I like most about this nursery is the layout and landscape of the nursery itself. It inspires you to go home and garden.
Gary and I headed for the fruit trees. I found a Granny Smith apple tree. Although I already purchased a Fuji, I wanted the Granny Smith tree to provide apples to cook with. Try as I might, I couldn't find any chocolate trees for Paul. Chocolate is the only kind of pie that he likes.
I grabbed a Thompson's grapevine as well. Even though I picked up two Concord grapevines earlier, I also wanted a simple table grape. Dante and I picked up a watermelon plant to go into one of the wine barrels. Two weeks earlier we purchased a pumpkin plant with plans to put it in the other barrel.
We headed home with our purchases and went back outside to work. The three of us used pick axes and shovels to dig holes for the trees and plants. Unfortunately, at one time a road ran through our backyard and we had to dig out chunks of asphalt to get to the good soil beneath. We managed to get all of the trees in and all but four of the plants in before I cried, "Uncle". After two solid days of hard labor, I just didn't have anymore strength in me and I knew that mom and Gary had to be exhausted as well. I promised my mom that I would put the rest of the plants in the ground as soon as possible. In the meantime, we tidied the backyard so that mom could take pictures for my grandmother. Grams couldn't make the trip, but was excited about me finally having a backyard.
As my mom clicked away, Dante and I released ladybugs to help with pest control. Around 3:00 pm, mom and Gary loaded the Rototiller in the back of the truck and headed home to Fresno. Dante and I promptly fell asleep on the couch.
* Dante and I try to figure out the best way to release a Tub o' Ladybugs.
