Home Living Room Our Backyard Project: Part Three- Lawn Installation
Our Backyard Project: Part Three- Lawn Installation
Monday, 01 June 2009
By 7:00 am on Saturday morning, Gary and I were out the door while Mom stayed home with Dante. We drove to Wegman's Nursery to purchase additional trees, plants and supplies.

Despite downing two cups of coffee each, Gary and I struggled to wake up as we walked through the rows of plants. We perked up a little when we reached the trees. Their selection was much better than Home Depot's. I purchased a Fuji Apple tree, an apricot tree and two Concord Grape vines.

After we left Wegman's I stopped by Noah's Bagels to pick up breakfast for everyone. I had purchased sandwich fixin's and chips earlier in the week and made a macaroni salad the night before. Mom brought donuts and cookies so we were more than set for food.

I am blessed to have friends that I love to spend time with and who are willing to lend a hand when needed. At 9:00 am, Janna, Karl, Jesse and Kevin arrived eager to get work.

The rest of the day was spent like this:

* Additional Rototiling
* Trip to Orchard Supply Hardware for supplies
* Additional rock removal
* Trip to A1 Rental to rent trencher
* Trip back to A1 Rental to return defective trencher
* Dig trenches by hand
* Trip to Home Depot for more supplies
* Remove more rocks
* Plant Irish Moss along the side of the back cement slab
* Eat lunch
* Lay down sprinkler system
* Trip to Home Depot for even more supplies
* Trip to Ace Hardware for supplies that Home Depot doesn't have
* Trip to Wegman's Nursery for supplies Home Depot doesn't have
* Test sprinkler system
* Move massive pile of sod from front yard to backyard
* Lay sod
* Wonder why I have 30 additional pieces of sod left
* Question mathematic skills
* Remember that I gave dimensions to sod company and they calculated sod needs.
* Blamed sod company and felt better about my mathematic skills.
* Soaked newly laid sod
* Admired our beautiful new lawn

As you can see, despite our best efforts of purchasing supplies in advance, we made many trips to get more. It's the nature of home projects and something we anticipated.

When we finally called it a day, we headed over to Janna and Karl's house for dinner. They live less than a mile away and thought it would be nice to get a complete break from our work. It was a smart idea.

I absolutely love Janna and Karl's home and especially their backyard. I immediately relaxed as soon as I walked in the door. We feasted on fruit, fresh veggies, sausage sandwiches and more, washing everything down with dark beer or red wine (except for Dante of course).

Somehow, in the time that Janna left our house to the time we arrived, she managed to make a delicious lemon cake from the lemons in her backyard. (Janna, if you are reading this, mom and I would still like to get the recipe from you!) After dinner, we relaxed and chatted with each other for awhile longer before exhaustion set in.

It was a good day!
