A friend of mine and her husband have been very successful in their personal and financial lives. They have three beautiful children and live in a modest, well cared for home. Because of their jobs, they employ a nanny that takes care of their children during the day. Recently, the nanny expressed concern that she was on the verge of losing her home. She had purchased a brand new, five bedroom home, about twice the size of my friend's home. It is apparent that the nanny purchased more house than she could afford and has been hard hit by the current financial crisis. I am very sorry for her situation and hope she is able to pull out of it successfully.
Conversely, I continue to be impressed by the people around me that spend less than they make. Although my friend could easily afford a bigger home, she and her husband chose to stay in their smaller home, which allows them to live below their means. As people struggle around them, they are not feeling the financial crisis at all. It's another powerful lesson that the only way to manage your finances successfully is to spend less than you make.
