Do you have a Money Saving Underground?
Saturday, 21 February 2009
Over the summer, I realized that my friends, family and I created a Money Saving Underground without even realizing it.

We share magazines, books, CDs and DVDs. This is interesting as well as entertaining because we end up reading, watching and listening to what we may not have considered before.

We swap clothes, unused makeup and accessories. This is especially great for special occasions. It really saves not having to run out and pick up a purse or piece of jewelry for that special event that you will only use one time.

We share excess produce from our gardens. We purposefully plant different items so that we don't end up trying to pawn truckloads of zucchini off on each other.

We go to Costco together and split our purchases. This buddy-system helps keep us from catching "Costco Fever" where you go in for toilet paper and walk out with a new wide screen TV.

We alert each other to great sales and will pick up items for those that can't make it to the store. This saves time and gas!

We trade skilled labor with each other. Some of us can sew. Some of us are great at repairs and some of us are masters in the kitchen. Each one of us has a skill that is useful for trade.

The benefits to our underground community extend beyond saving time and money. By swapping clothes, books, etc., we save the environment from those items going into landfill when we are finished with them. However, I believe that the greatest benefit of our community has been the social aspect. We are all great friends and this community we have created has brought us even closer together.

My friend Lori just joined our Money Saving Underground. She is letting me borrow a special airplane seat belt for Dante (http://www.kidsflysafe.com/) to use on our trip to Disneyland (yes, I got talked into flying, but more about that in another entry). The seatbelt retails at around $75. Because Dante is already 30 pounds and I don't anticipate him flying again before he doesn't need the extra safety measure, this saved us $75 on an item we would have only used once. Thank you Lori and I am looking forward to returning the favor.
