On the way to work the other day, my husband Paul listened to a conversation on KGO about how the CEO of Zappos was using Twitter to help promote his company. How does a shoe company benefit from posting one liners on the Internet throughout the day? Apparently, it benefits greatly. He has quite the cult following with 103,472 people signed up to read his posts.
For Zappos, or any company using Twitter, I think it puts a personality behind the brand. After Paul told me about the story, I started following his entries and immediately became engaged by them. Some of his entries are very silly like, "Stubbed my toe last night, it's been red and swollen all day. Wondering if I should call a doctor. Or maybe a toe truck."
He talks about what he is eating, where he is dining and who he is meeting with. As a business geek, I am fascinated about his meeting with Doc Martens even though I'm not a shoe hound. And so, I admit that I am completely sucked in by Zappos on Twitter.
I also signed up for Suze Orman's blog, but she doesn't write often. Writing this just made me think that I should see if Sir Richard Branson is on Twitter... there he is and I am now following him. I am a huge fan of his too. Here is a guy that is not only good at making money, he is good at living and enjoying life! I am looking forward to knowing what he is doing on a day to day basis.
It wasn't until Tuesday night that Paul suggested that I start Twittering for Budget Savvy. I was surprised that he suggested it. It's bad enough that perfect strangers see pictures of him in the Living the Budget Savvy Life section drinking cocktails in hot tubs in Tahoe or branding cattle in Mariposa County. I thought he might be put off by the idea of me sending out updates like, "Paul and I skipped Baskin Robbins and opted to get ice cream at Safeway. Just as delicious and half the price." As long as it doesn't bother him, I'm happy to give it a try.
