The first Budget Savvy segment for Eye on the Bay aired last night. Despite my own personal interest, I thought the episode was wonderful. It was fun to watch and was filled with money saving ideas. It offered tips for getting into the top Bay Area museums for free. There was an itinerary for a fun and adventurous Bay Area road trip that would cost you no more than $20. It's definitely worth Tivo'ing.
As for the Budget Savvy segment, I was happy to talk about my absolute favorite Budget Savvy habit which is to pay all of your bills on payday. Paying your bills on payday ensures the money is available. It also eliminates one of the greatest wastes of money - late fees. Payday is also the best time to fill your gas tank and buy groceries. Now you know exactly how much disposable income you have for that pay period to spend as you please.
Brian Hackney and I also talked about what happens when you pay all your bills, but there isn't enough money left over for anything else. That is the best time to exercise your creativity. Most households have hundreds of dollars in groceries just sitting in their pantry and refrigerator. We tend to get in a cooking rut and stop seeing all the other options you have available right there in your kitchen.
Whether your short on cash this pay period or just want an opportunity to save a little extra, challenge yourself to see how long you can eat out of your pantry. Often, we get into the mode that a well stocked pantry needs to be static. Everything in your pantry should be consumed within three months. If you see something sitting there for three months, either eat it or donate it to a shelter and don't buy it again.
For my next appearance on Eye on the Bay, I promise to not be quite so serious and smile a little more throughout the segment. I'm also looking into getting even higher heels. Brian Hackney is one tall guy!
They haven't uploaded the episode onto their website yet, but when they do, I promise to post a link. They did post a transcript including additional Budget Savvy tips along with discounts and deals from around the Bay Area. Here is the link: Wallet Wise 2/12/09.
