Experimental Chocolate Ice Cream

Note to self: Read the directions thoroughly before beginning any new recipe. This is a lesson I have "relearned" many times since I started cooking at the age of eight. I learned it again this weekend.

I got a late start making the ice cream yesterday. I accidentally fell asleep on the couch for about three hours. We were in Concord, CA for most of Saturday and I had a 7:00 am FFIT@home meeting yesterday. I guess it all caught up to me. Additional note to self: falling asleep while SpongeBob is on TV gives you really goofy dreams!

By the time I woke up, I was in a hurry to get started on dinner and the ice cream. In my defense, I did read the ice cream recipe thoroughly. What I didn't do is reread the directions to the actual ice cream maker before I got started. The crucial step I left out was to freeze the bowl portion of the ice cream maker. What I ended up making was Chocolate Ice Cream Soup as the bowl wasn't cold enough to freeze the contents.

Paul and I decided to put the "soup" in the freezer to see what happens. Two hours later, we pulled it out. The edges of the ice cream were frozen, but the middle was still soupy. I scooped out the frozen sides into dishes and ladled some of the soup over it, kind of like a sauce. The consistency may have been a little off, but the ice cream was AMAZING! It took a lot of willpower to not go back for seconds.

The next two weekends are pretty hectic with travel and Fearless Fitness events, but I hope to try the recipe again as soon as possible. If the ice cream soup tasted that good, I can only imagine how good the real ice cream will taste.
