What really lured Dante and I there was a bakery we kept hearing about called Sprinkles. The only baked item on the menu is cupcakes, although they do sell a Sshot of frosting" which I think is brilliant. I had been hearing about this place from various sources and because I love baking and I especially love eating, I had to go. Our target cupcake was the Red Velvet.
For years, my mom was the only one I knew who baked Red Velvet cakes as it is a Southern specialty. Nowadays, you see red velvet cakes just about everywhere. I wanted to see if Sprinkles' Red Velvet cupcakes were better than mine, or even my moms.
Dante and I ordered our cupcakes and picked one up for Paul to have when he got home that night. We headed to the car and proceeded to take a single bite out of the cupcake to ease our anticipation until we could devour them when we got home. They were heavenly!!!! It took A LOT of willpower to make the 10 minute drive home without eating the rest of our cupcakes and licking the box.
I can't say that they are better than my mom's as it wouldn't be a fair comparison. She uses a butter frosting and Sprinkles uses a cream cheese frosting. However, their cupcakes are an amazingly delicious treat.
When Paul got home last night I warned him that he and Dante better prepare themselves to eat Red Velvet cupcakes every weekend for the next few months as I am on a mission to make mine as good as theirs - with cream cheese frosting!
I have to say, the $3.50 price tag is over-the-top for a single cupcake. Especially for something I can make as good (or close) at home - just give me a few months to master them.
